Czołpino Lighthouse

30 min by car + 20 min on foot

A red brick lighthouse from 1875, tucked a kilometre inland on a wooded dune. A secret rocket base hid it from visitors until 1994. Today, the climb up rewards you with a view of the shifting dunes, Lake Łebsko, and the Baltic.

The tower is 25 metres, but it sits on a 55-metre wooded dune, so the light actually beams from 75 metres above sea level - a range of nearly 39 km. Built from red faced brick between 1872 and 1875, electrified in the late 1930s, it still shines through its original 1926 French Fresnel lens. Flash characteristic: 3 + 2 + 1 + 2 seconds.

For most of the 20th century the site was off-limits. A secret military rocket unit operated just next door, so the lighthouse stayed closed. It opened to visitors only in July 1994. The approach is a 1.5 km blue-marked trail from the forest car park at Smołdziński Las - through pine woods, heather, and wooden boardwalks. Steep stairs take you up to the viewing platform.
